I'd hate to be the ass-hole to spoil everyones "The Prestige did it first" bouble, but this concept was actually done before that in a short cartoon from the 90's. I know cause it still gives me nightmares to this day although the nace eludes me at the moment.
Pretty sure I've seen this concept before, somewhere online. It was a film about how teleportation was merely long-distance cloning and the original is killed while the clone moves on with all the memories and feelings of the original.
Well in short the joke is that the teleporter managed to create two of him. It's a theory that if a form of teleportation was created, the method would involve the deconstruction of the original body, its destruction one might say, and the reconstruction of the same body in a different location. Theoretically if the machine malfunctioned, it could be set to create the new body whilst either leaving the old one, as happened here, or keep replicating the person, or other sorts of chaos.
I find it interesting that in essence, the teleporter in fact destroys the original body, killing it if you like, and rebirthing it exactly as it was before being destroyed somewhere else
